Owen often doesn’t get as much attention about sports as Jack does. Not that he isn’t a phenomenally gifted natural athlete — it’s just that he doesn’t care that much about winning or losing, or perfecting his technique or working out or watching sports on TV or in person like his brother.
Owen is in sports for a REALLY normal reason: he has fun.
So I guess our expectations are different and he surprises us sometimes. Like last night.
Kevin got to watch the last few minutes of Owen’s scimmage at practice. He said Owen was playing fantastically as a blitzing linebacker, unstoppable at breaking through the line.
However, Kevin said that all of a sudden, without any change of instruction from the coach, Owen started hanging back and not blitzing and made an amazing tackle on the sideline.
Kevin asked Owen after practice why he stopped blitzing, if his coach had told him to stop. Owen said, “No,” his coach hadn’t said to stop blitzing, he made his own decision.
“It was getting to the end of practice, and I know the other team always tries to get a big run around the outside at the end of the game, so I was hanging back to stop the run,” Owen said.
Just when we think Owen is the most clueless, he comes up with something like that.
